Ryan Holder is the Artistic Director of the Children’s Chorale of Flagstaff and conducts the high school ensemble, Madrigal Singers.  Dr. Holder is also currently the Associate Director of Choral Studies at Northern Arizona University, where he directs the Women's Chorale and Vocal Jazz Ensembles, teaches undergraduate conducting and methods, oversees choral student teachers, and serves as the advisor for the NAU student chapter of the American Choral Directors Association.

Ryan recently finished his doctoral work in Choral Conducting from the University of Miami, where he studied under professor of music, Jo-Michael Scheibe and Donald Oglesby.  His doctoral essay, A Method for Using Digital Video Technology with BlackboardTM as a Supplemental Tool in the Undergraduate Conducting Class illustrates how conducting examples can be posted online for student viewing and evaluation.  Dr. Holder holds Bachelors and Master's degrees from Southern Oregon University and University of Northern Colorado, respectively.

Before coming to NAU in the fall of 2006, Ryan taught in the Oregon public school system for 5 years.  His choirs won awards in both vocal jazz and traditional choral music, including first prize in the Women’s Choir division at the Vienna Youth and Music Festival in 2001.

Erica Kragness received her Bachelor of Arts degree in vocal music education at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, where she studied with Dr. Weston Noble, Dr. Timothy Peter, and Dr. Sandra Peter.  Currently, Ms. Kragness directs the Northern Arizona University Singers while she pursues a Master’s Degree in Choral Conducting under the direction of Dr. Edith Copley.  She is the director of Dolce Cantando, the middle grade chorus of the Children’s Chorale of Flagstaff.  Prior to relocating in Flagstaff, Ms. Kragness was the Director of Choirs from 1999 - 2002 at Brooklyn Center Junior/Senior High School, and the Associate Director of Choirs from 2002 - 2006 at Coon Rapids High School in Minneapolis, MN where she directed the Women’s Choir, Mixed Chorus, and Men’s Chorale.

Dolce Note


Nancy Hartgrove, a native of Atlanta, Georgia relocated to Flagstaff two years ago. She attended Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama and received both her undergraduate and graduate degrees in music education from Samford University.  Nancy taught general music for four years prior to Flagstaff and is now in her sixth year of teaching.  Nancy attended Orff certification level 1 classes as well as Choristers Guild workshops, most recently lead by Z. Randall Stroope, and is also an accomplished flute player.
